The Art

Harriet creates elegant, finely crafted hand built vessels and wall pieces out of earthenware which celebrate the feminine. Richly coloured and flamboyantly embossed surfaces give her work depth and intrigue. Each piece is hand painted and often fired several times until she achieves the look and depth of colour she desires. Harriet’s work is collected nationally and internationally.

Harriet also makes mixed media wall pieces employing clay, ephemera and found pieces to relate coded narratives. Her art cards begin with original drawings and paintings which she then embellishes with whimsical fabrics, textures and glass elements.

 The Artist

John Robertson and Harriet Hiemstra met at the Kootenay School of Art in the 1970s and later married and settled in Cobble Hill. Since 1988 they have been working and selling out of their studio and showroom in beautiful Cobble Hill, attempting to honor and preserve a small part of the traditional craft of pottery making. In 1996, they teamed up with JoVic Pottery and others to start The Pottery Store in Chemainus.
