The Art

Mary’s focus is on expressing the beauty and strength of pure form. She delights in the challenge of creating contemporary vessels based on classic lines and has a keen interest in developing original glaze effects for her works. She offers two lines of work: exhibition art pieces and functional tableware and cookware.

Her exhibition pieces include sculptures and wheel thrown vessels that are then glazed using slips and crawl glazes or unique lithium glazes which are then fired in an electric or raku kiln. Her functional tableware and cookware is simple and elegant using a single glaze. Mary has also developed a line of cookery she calls Peasantware, which is fashioned after 19th century cookery. Peasantware has a soft buttery glaze inside but is left unglazed outside. If washed by hand, Peasantware will develop a pleasing patina, if washed in the dishwasher, the pottery will keep its original colour. The choice is yours!
