Functional Pottery – Care and Use
All of the glazes used in our tableware and cookware are tested to be food safe. Our functional pottery is dishwasher, freezer, microwave and oven safe. When handled properly, it will last for years. However, pottery will not withstand thermal shock. Please use the following guidelines to avoid breaking and cracking:
- place your pottery dish into a cold oven and then turn on the heat
- when removing pottery from a hot oven, avoid placing it on a cold surface such as marble counters
- never place your pottery directly on a heating element
- if you plan on freezing your pottery with food in it, be sure the food and pottery are at room temperature first
Exhibition Pieces
Exhibition Pieces come in various types of clay and firing. Upon purchasing we will be happy to coach you on how to take care of your special piece. In general;
- raku is low fired and not functional – it is not food safe
- pieces with textured glazes such as alligator skin or crawl glazes on interior surfaces are not food safe
- crystalline glazes are food safe but it is not recommended to store food or cook food on them. They do, however, make wonderful serving dishes if desired.
