The Story of Arthritis Tumblers

About eight years ago JoVic Pottery received a request for a new design of a mug because the customer could no longer hold the handles of her beloved handmade pottery mugs. Victor went into the studio to develop a prototype with the following features in mind:

The mugs should become tumblers, with no handles so a person with disabilities could wrap their hands around it. The body of the mug should be ‘muscled’ by creating a narrow spiralled wall, thereby allowing a better grip. The base should be wide for better balance when placing on the table and finally, the texture on the outside should be mottled to improve grip and to dissipate the heat to make it more comfortable to hold.

Vic made six mugs the first time. The original customer bought two of them and the other four sold within a week. JoVic had an instant hit. Since then, we have gotten feedback from folks with other disabilities who have raved about these beautiful vessels. Folks with Raynaud’s Phenomenon (a circulation disorder), tremors, Rheumatoid Arthritis and muscle degeneration have found these mugs to be easy to use and comforting to hold as the heat soothes sore hands.
