Crystalline glazes are rarely seen because they are technically challenging to achieve. Peggy Grigor is our crystalline artist and she studied these glazes for many years before she could guarantee consistent and pleasing results. The crystals grow from a nucleus of zinc in a high fired glaze that must be held at peak temperature for several hours – the longer the hold, the bigger the crystals.

During this long growing period, the glaze continually runs down the piece, so catchment containers must be attached. Later, these containers, which are now glass fused to the bottoms, must be carefully chisled and ground off. The results are worth it, though. Peggy says crystalline glazes require a little bit of science, a little bit of magic and a little bit of luck.

The following are some examples of what we carry but by no means a complete representation. If you would like more information about our crystalline glaze collection, please contact us.
