Renée Sala

Renée Sala is a professional potter living in Victoria, on Vancouver Island. She creates functional pottery with a strong, high-fired, white, porcelain-like clay. This material is a pleasure to work with as it is a wonderful canvas on which to apply glazes and textures. It also allows the pots to be light-weight, yet retain strength, which results in a beautiful and functional piece of pottery. She hand-mixes all her own glazes using non-toxic, lead-free ingredients. All of her work is food-safe, and is safe for everyday use in the dishwasher, microwave, and oven.

Renée has been influenced over the years both by her mother, Barb Springer-Sapergia, who is one of the founding members of the Pottery Store, and by her travels, which have been mostly in Asia. She thinks it is important to maintain a simplicity in life, and an attention to detail, and she hopes that comes through in her work. She smooths the bottoms of pieces that will rest on the surfaces of your home, and the edges that will touch your skin. She applies texture with hand-made stamps and other tools, and lets the glazes work together with these textures in the kiln, excited to see the results after every firing.

Renée's current line includes both thrown and slab-based work, using colours that are rich and natural. The shapes and surfaces of her pieces are meant to reflect her influences and retain a degree of modernity. Hopefully, her pottery will be used in the home as part of a conscious decision to make everyday events more beautiful.
