The Loofah (Luffa aegyptica) is a rather weird zuchinni-like object with a fibrous internal structure that converts to a sponge when dry.  We've been grinding them up for years and adding them to soaps for a useful natural scrub. or, Why am I using hand-made soap? They don't really use 'cold' ingredients,,,but they don't boil chemicals together to create their artisanal soaps. Traditionally, fine soaps were made by hand with oils of Palm, Coconut and Olive.... .those found to be best for skin, health and the environment. Here in North America, a plentiful supply of tallow created a soap industry based on by-products of the beef industry. Next, petrochemicals arrived, and synthetic detergents made their way into our soaps....highly colored and fragranced, 'triple-milled,' we didn't even notice the difference. But our skin did!

For over 30 years, the Saltspring Soapworks family has been handmaking soap in small batches, returning to those time-honored methods used a Century ago in Europe where the Art of Soapmaking flourished.
